An explosion at a gas refilling outlet around Liberty Junction in Kubwa, Abuja, triggered panic among residents on Sunday morning after a fire broke out at the facility.
The Federal Fire Service, FCT Command, said its firefighters, alongside other emergency responders, arrived at the scene at about 6:30am and quickly brought the fire under control, averting a potentially larger disaster.
“The Federal Fire Service, FCT Command firefighters and other emergency responders today, Sunday 27th September 2026, at about 6:30am swiftly responded to a gas fire at Liberty Junction, Kubwa, Abuja, averting what would have been a major destructive gas explosion,” the Fire Service said.
The impact of the incident was reportedly felt in the surrounding area, with the blast said to have shaken nearby buildings, uprooted signposts and overturned a traffic warden’s booth close to the junction.
Additional water tankers from the fire service and personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency were also said to have joined the emergency operation.
Some residents of neighbouring communities, including Dantata Estate, said the sound of the explosion was loud enough to wake them from sleep, while others reported that their buildings shook.
Unconfirmed accounts circulating on Facebook alleged that the fire may have started after a motorist driving against traffic crashed into the gas outlet where cylinders were stored. However, the claim had not been independently verified as of the time of filing this report.
The exact circumstances surrounding the incident, including the cause of the fire and whether a vehicle collision triggered it, remained under investigation.
There was no immediate official confirmation of any death or injury in connection with the incident.
