Twelve people have been killed and 309 others injured following a fresh attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, amid escalating hostilities involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, October 10, was the third reported attack on the airport within a week, according to a report by the Saudi Gazette, which cited the country’s General Authority of Civil Aviation.
The victims included four Saudi nationals, two Bangladeshis and one citizen each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan.
The civil aviation authority said the injured victims had been evacuated to hospitals for medical attention, noting that some sustained critical injuries.
It added that the attack damaged parts of the airport’s facilities, while assessments were underway to establish the full extent of the destruction.
Airport operations were temporarily suspended following the incident to allow officials to inspect the affected facilities, establish their safety and protect passengers, workers and critical aviation infrastructure.
Reuters reported that Saudi authorities and the Saudi-led coalition had accused Yemen’s Houthi group of carrying out the attack.
However, the news agency noted that the Houthis had not claimed responsibility for the October 10 incident.
The latest attack came days after another assault on the airport on Thursday, when three Saudi nationals were reportedly killed and several others injured in two separate incidents.
The Saudi Gazette, citing the civil aviation authority, reported the earlier fatalities and injuries.
The repeated attacks have raised fresh concerns over the safety of the airport, a major aviation hub in the Saudi capital, as hostilities between the parties continue.
