The Nigerian Medical Students’ Association (NiMSA) is set to host its 2026 Health Summit in Abuja from December 2 to 5, bringing together medical students, healthcare professionals, policymakers, innovators and development partners to discuss the future of healthcare delivery in Nigeria and across Africa.

The four-day summit, themed “The Next Frontier: Leadership, Innovation and the Future of African Healthcare,” is expected to attract over 200 delegates from accredited medical schools nationwide, alongside key stakeholders in the health sector.

The annual gathering, which serves as NiMSA’s flagship national conference, seeks to equip the next generation of medical professionals with the leadership skills, knowledge and networks required to address emerging healthcare challenges.

Founded in 1968, NiMSA is the umbrella body representing medical students across accredited medical schools in Nigeria and serves as the official student arm of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

The 2026 edition of the summit will focus on critical issues confronting Africa’s healthcare systems, including workforce shortages, brain drain, inadequate infrastructure, infectious diseases, climate-related health risks and the growing burden of non-communicable diseases.

Discussions will also cover primary healthcare strengthening, digital health technologies, health policy and governance, sexual and reproductive health, medical research and epidemic preparedness.

The summit also presents an opportunity to foster engagement with key health-sector institutions and stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations agencies, development partners and private-sector organisations. Through these engagements, NiMSA hopes to strengthen collaboration, encourage knowledge exchange and promote partnerships that will advance healthcare innovation and leadership across Nigeria and Africa.

Activities lined up include keynote addresses, high-level panel discussions, technical workshops, leadership masterclasses, research presentations, innovation exhibitions, mentorship sessions and networking opportunities.

A major highlight will be the Health Innovation Hackathon, where medical students, young healthcare professionals and health-tech innovators will develop practical solutions to pressing healthcare challenges.

Shortlisted teams will pitch their ideas before a panel of experts drawn from the healthcare, business and investment communities. The winning team is expected to receive mentorship, funding and technical partnership support to transform its proposed solution into a practical intervention.

The programme will commence with delegates’ arrival and registration on December 2, followed by leadership, management, technology and innovation sessions on December 3.

December 4 will feature discussions on policymaking, advocacy, innovation and professional responsibility, culminating in a Dinner and Awards Night to recognise outstanding contributions. Delegates are expected to depart on December 5.

Meanwhile, NiMSA has opened the summit to sponsorship and partnership opportunities, inviting corporate organisations, healthcare institutions, pharmaceutical companies, development agencies, NGOs and other interested stakeholders to support the initiative.

Available opportunities include financial sponsorship, technical partnerships, product and service support, media partnerships, capacity-building programmes, health outreach collaboration and exhibition sponsorship.

The association says customised sponsorship packages are available, offering partners opportunities for brand visibility, direct engagement with emerging healthcare leaders, talent discovery and alignment with corporate social responsibility initiatives.
