After 15 days of intensive competition, the curtain will fall on the 12th African Games tonight in Rabat.
Team Nigeria was conveniently occupying the second spot on the medals table at the close of events on Friday night.
Only two events are yet to be completed.
The position will certainly not change, but there would be additional medals for events not concluded.
Team Nigeria ended Day 15 of the ongoing African Games on a high as its medal haul increased to 126 (46 gold, 33 silver and 47 bronze medals) at the end of proceedings.
Egypt occupied first spot with 102 old medals while South Africa was third with 36 gold medals.
Sade Olatoye was Nigeria’s only individual gold medalist on the last day in athletics as she emerged victorious in the women’s Shot Put. Her first-round attempt of 16.61m was good enough for the gold. It was Olatoye’s second medal of the Games, having won bronze in the Hammer Throw.
In men’s Javelin, Nnamdi Chinecherem won bronze, throwing a distance of 73.24m.
On the track, Divine Oduduru failed to meet the expectations once more as the sprinter once again finished 2nd with a 20.54s clocking in the men’s 200m final.
Nigeria’s other representative, Ogho-Oghene Egwero, was 6th in 21.00s. Zambia’s Sidney Siame won the race with 20.34s.
Nigeria’s only athlete listed to run in the women’s 200m final, Rosemary Chukwuma, did not take part in her race.
In the women’s 400m Hurdles, Abasiono Akpan rallied her way back into contention as she was able to claim bronze for her efforts. She clocked 57.66s.
Nnamdi Chinecherem won bronze in men’s Javelin, throwing a distance of 73.24m. It is his first senior medal, having won gold at the African junior championship in April.
Nigeria women’s 4x400m made up of the quartet of Patience Okon-Geroge, Blessing Oladoye, Kemi Francis and Favour Ofili combined to run a time of 3:30.32s which fetched them gold.
For the men, they settled for bronze in 3:03.42s.
After her earlier heroics, Ayomide Bello showed how good she is in the C1 200m Women Final of Canoeing. She returned a time of 50.51s to win the event. She also teamed up with her compatriot Foloki to win the doubles in the event.
Nigeria on the last day of action in weightlifting got more medals. Obeyi Joseph was the first to clinch the medal as she settled for bronze in the women’s +87kg (245kg), Snatch (105kg) and Clean-Jerk (130kg) classification. In the same vein, Olawale Barde won bronze in the men’s 102kg (343kg), Snatch (158kg) and Clean-Jerk (185kg).
Also, Tijani Abdul secured bronze in the men’s +109kg (323kg), Snatch (180kg) and Clean-Jerk (143kg).
Finally, Nigeria scooped two gold and two silver medals in weightlifting. Daniel Amaas proved too strong for The Gambia’s Mbal Cumba as he edged him 3-1 to win gold in the men’s Freestyle 65kg Finals. Also, Emmanuel John pipped Sami Mustapha 3-1 to claim gold in the men’s Freestyle 74kg final.
Soso Tamurau lost to Egypt’s Hosam Meghany 3-1 to win the men’s Freestyle 97kg final, while Ebikewemimo Wilson was overpowered by Algeria’s Abdelhak Khebache in the men’s Freestyle 57kg final.
On a rather dissaponting note, Nigeria’s wait for a first gold medal since 1973 in the men’s football event continues as the Flying Eagles, who represented the country, lost to Burkina Faso 2-0 in the final.
Nigeria also finished second at the last edition of African Games in Congo Brazzaville albeit with 47 gold medals.

Bilikis lamented that walls and signboards, among others, have replaced the existence of trees in the environment.
“Aside from planting trees in your various homes purposely as demanded by this programme, each of you could personalize the planting culture, for instance, as community leader and citizens of this state, you could plant trees to mark occasions,” she said.

The Ondo State government has been commended for prioritizing the welfare of pensioners by paying over N4 billion arrears of gratuity owed pensioners by the immediate past administration in the state.
Members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Ondo State chapter, led by its chairman, Chief Raphael Adetuwo, gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the state Head of Service (HoS), Mr Dare Aragbaiye, in his office in Akure.
He also said that the state government has not defaulted in the monthly payment of pension to its members since the inauguration of the Akeredolu led administration in 2017.
Speaking on behalf of the union, its Secretary, Comrade Akin Sunday, appealed to the state government to commence the implementation of the approved 33 per cent pension increase for pensioners, which their counterparts at the federal level have been enjoying since 2014.
Comrade Sunday equally enjoined the state government to increase the allocation for the payment of gratuity to pensioners at both the state and council levels in order to enhance prompt payment of gratuity to workers immediately after their retirement, lamenting that so many of the retirees have died before the payment of their gratuity.
In his response, the state Head of Service, Mr. Dare Aragbaiye, charged pensioners to join hands with the state government to block all leakages of pension fund, and to alleviate the plight of their members in the state, by exposing all those who engage in collecting the pension of the dead pensioners.
Mr Aragbaiye said members of the union should desist from colluding with serving officers of the government who are extorting money from other pensioners for the purpose of facilitating payment of their gratuity, saying that the state government would no longer tolerate such corrupt practices in the system.
He said: “l know that when people are retiring, they contribute money to give officers to process their gratuity and pension. This practice is ungodly.”

The political fight between the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and Senator Shehu Sani in the 8th senate has taken a new dimension as the two politicians engaged themselves in a war of words.
Malam Nasir El-Rufai, the Kaduna State Governor, has thumped out his chest for kicking out Senators Shehu Sani and Uthman Hunkuyi from the mainstream politics of the state.
El-Rufai, who said Sen. Shehu Sani is now a blogger, also disclosed that Uthman Hunkuyi has relocated to China as he has retired them from politics.
The governor disclosed this when the Kpop Ham, Malam Danladi Gyet Maude paid him a courtesy visit at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna.
el rufai accused the two politicians of not giving the people of Kaduna State the opportunity of getting the loan that will help in improving their lots.
The governor told the Kpop Ham that his appointment of Ham people into sensitive positions was based not just on merit, but competence.
In his reaction through a statement on Friday, Senator Shehu Sani also said, he was pleased to reduce the height of the Governor from dwarf to a leper who was rejected by the Governors forum.
Sani said he has no apology over the statement, adding that it is in response to a statement credited to the Governor who claimed to have turned him to a blogger.
The statement read: “My attention has been brought to a statement credited to the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam el rufai, whom he claimed to have “turned me to a blogger and exiled Hunkuyi to China.
“I’m pleased to have reduced the height of el rufai from a dwarf to a leper who was rejected by the Governors forum.
“el rufai, I’m not responsible for removing your name from the entourage of those who travelled to Japan with Mr. President after wasting your three days in Abuja. Eat Yahuza Suya since you missed the Sushi.”
He berated the governor for dissipating energy only on his Presidential ambition while his state is under the siege and control of kidnappers.
“Mr el rufai, face the President’s men who threw away your list of ministers and threw out your luggage from Japan trip.
“He is still obsessed with world loans and using it as an excuse to justify his incompetence while his counterparts in other states are busy commissioning and executing projects.
“Since you are still angry for not getting the loan, I can help you with some high heeks shoes to increase your height,” he said.
The governor also lamented that people misunderstood him even when he gave sensitive appointments to non-indigenes.
“We care about capacity, competence and commitment to service. All the people appointed by us are strictly and basically on merit.
“If we used politics, no one from Jaba local government will be appointed by our administration because of the poor results of the elections results,” he said.
He thanked the Kpop Ham for giving Kaduna State quality individuals for appointments, saying that, only Zaria and Jaba local governments have the highest number of people appointed to sensitive offices in the state.
The governor promised to see to the request of the Ham people in order to enhance their well-being and improve the lot of the people of Kaduna State, especially those in the rural areas.
The Kpop Ham, Malam Danladi Gyet Maude, while speaking, expressed pleasure to the governor for appointing many Ham sons and daughters into various positions of authority in the state.
He called on the governor to as a matter of priority, help in completing various projects in Ham kingdom which had been left uncompleted.
