The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the last general election, Omoyele Sowore, has accused supporters of Peter Obi of trying to ensure the downfall of Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, over an ugly encounter with a police officer in Lagos.

Abujapress reports that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Baba, had on Saturday ordered the immediate arrest of Seun following a viral video of the incident.

But in a post on his verified social media page on Saturday night, Sowore blamed Obi’s supporters of blowing the issue out of proportion as a result of personal hatred for the musician.

He said : “The depth of hatred! Nigeria Police Force have declared Seun Anikulapo Kuti wanted to investigate circumstances that led to an altercation with a police police officer on the 3rd Mainland bridge but Mr. Peter Obi followers want him summarily executed!”

Abujapress recalls that Seun had before the February 25 presidential election called out Obi – the Labour Party presidential candidate, saying he was not the one the country needs as president.

Seun’s criticism of Obi sparked reactions from Peter Okoye of the P-Square hip-hop fame and other supporters of the former Anambra governor, who hit back at the Afrobeat star.

Seun was reportedly quoted to have said, “There’s no president that can save Nigeria. Only the people of Nigeria can save Nigeria. Even if Peter Obi, who is the internet favourite, wins – Peter Obi with all his noisemakers; let’s be factual on that because the issue of that is just the way Nigerian politics is – he hasn’t had the time because he started too late.

“You can’t tell me that just because you lost PDP primaries 18 months to the election, you suddenly start a movement, and you have a real plan for the country? No, that’s opportunism, and not an opportunist will deliver Nigeria, it will be a dedicated individual that has looked at this country, that has dedicated his life, the person would have gone to every local government, the person would have his own structure, not jumping on Labour Party, Labour Party is a socialist structure, Peter Obi is a capitalist – where are they going?”
