Victor Boniface, a forward for the Super Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen, has been ruled out of the African Cup of Nations, which begins on January 16 in Cote ‘d’Ivoire, according to Owngoalnigeria.
The niggering injury was claimed to have kept him out of Sunday’s test game with local club Al Gharbia and Monday’s defeat to the Syli Nationale of Guinea.
“A scan was done today and the length of time he will be out of AFCON. Victor Boniface will return to Germany, where he will begin treatment for the groin injury that is expected to keep him out for six weeks,” Owngoalnigeria reported.
The 23-year-old seems to have resigned to fate after wishing his teammates the best of luck at the tournament.
“Good luck guys… Wish you all the best at afcon,” he posted on Instagram on Monday.
It is now expected that the Nigeria Football Federation will announce his replacement.
The former Saint Union Gelloise forward was poised to form a deadly partnership with Napoli star, Victor Osimhen after a blistering start to life at Bay Arena, where he has scored 10 goals and provided seven assists.
With his absence, the Nigerian team gunning for its fourth title has suffered another major blow after the withdrawal of midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi from the tournament due to a muscle injury that will keep him out for three months.
Ndidi has since been replaced by Royal Antwerp player, Alhassan Yusuf.
