In anticipation of today’s Biafra Heroes Day, declared by the separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnaghe Itam, has deployed policemen across schools in the state.

This move comes as part of efforts to ensure safety and maintain order during the event.

Similarly, the Enugu State government has rejected IPOB’s sit-at-home order for May 30, putting security agencies on high alert to prevent any disruption of law and order. IPOB had urged the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to reschedule WASSCE papers slated for today and advised Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Anambra State to shift its convocation date.

IPOB declared May 30 a sit-at-home day across the South-East to honor Igbo people killed during the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970, calling for no business activities and no movement on this day.

Punch correspondent observed a heavy security presence across major markets and schools in Anambra State on Wednesday, with security vehicles patrolling the areas. Residents were seen making last-minute purchases to avoid being stranded during the sit-at-home order.

Students taking part in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination were also seen relocating closer to their examination centers to avoid transportation issues.

Many customers flocked to banks and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) points to withdraw cash for necessary purchases. Grace Acho, a resident making quick purchases at Eke Awka Market in Awka, expressed her concerns: “My brother, when I heard that markets would not open tomorrow, I took permission from the office to rush here to buy some foodstuffs and get ready for tomorrow.”

The increased security measures and preparations by residents highlight the tension and anticipation surrounding Biafra Heroes Day in the South-East region.
