Abdelhakim Al-Shalmani, the President of the Libyan Football Federation, has tendered his resignation, as reported by The Libya Observer.
His resignation was announced during a regular meeting of the Federation’s General Assembly on Sunday.
In his resignation statement, Al-Shalmani expressed his desire to distance himself from what he described as the “failure in Libyan sports.”
He expressed gratitude to his colleagues and extended forgiveness to individuals across all segments of the sports sector, stating, “I thank all members of the General Assembly, and I forgive everyone from all segments of the sports sector.”
This announcement comes in the wake of serious accusations from Nigeria’s Super Eagles regarding the treatment they received from Libyan authorities during their recent visit for the second leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
The team was reportedly stranded at Al Abraq International Airport for over 16 hours without assistance from the Libyan Football Federation, prompting outrage and calls for accountability.
In response to the incident, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has committed to investigating the matter and taking appropriate action.
