A man has been accused of murder after allegedly shooting the administrator of a community WhatsApp group who removed him from the group, Pakistani police reported on Saturday.

The victim, Mushtaq Ahmed, was fatally shot on Thursday evening in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near the Afghan border — a region that has experienced recurring incidents of violence.

According to police documents reviewed by AFP and statements from a local police official, a man identified as Ashfaq has been charged in connection with the killing.

Mushtaq had reportedly removed Ashfaq from the WhatsApp group after a dispute, according to a statement given by Mushtaq’s brother, as seen by AFP.

He explained that the two had agreed to meet and resolve their differences, but Ashfaq allegedly arrived armed and shot Mushtaq during the encounter.

Ashfaq acted out of anger “in reaction to removal from WhatsApp group,” the statement said.

Incidents like these are exacerbated by the widespread availability of firearms, the persistence of tribal customs, and at times, gaps in law enforcement.
