A support group made up of climate champions in the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the umbrella of APC Climate Change Network (ACCN), has thrown its weight behind Senator Tanko Al-Makura for the position of National Chairman of the APC after former chairman, Dr Umar Ganduje's resignation last week.
The group, which was convened in 2024 to spearhead the party members' carbon literacy and green energy transition, in a press statement jointly signed by its Coordinator, Citizen Greg Odogwu, and Legal Officer, Barrister John Akpan, explained that its choice of Al-Makura was based both on his green development track record and inclusive governance personae.
"This endorsement reflects Senator Al-Makura's track record as a former governor that prioritized the development of green infrastructure in Nasarawa State and his unwavering commitment to inclusion and sustainable development.
"For instance, it is on record that, being a person living with hearing impairment himself, the senator is known for mainstreaming issues that concern persons with disability (PWDs) and is a champion of inclusive governance, which is at the heart of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). These characteristics are critical in the fight against climate change.
"As climate change champions who are focused on positioning the APC as the most climate-friendly political party in Africa, we know first-hand what it will take to green our great party at all levels,; hence we recognize the difference an Al-Makura Chairmanship shall make in bringing about this fundamental change.
"The ACCN is a network of climate change champions in the APC family, drawn from Wards, Local and State Governments, who are actively involved in advocating for a Just Transition to a green economy, for APC as a party and in support of the Climate Action and Energy Transition policies and programmes of the Federal Government under the able leadership of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
"Our members act as Climate Change Champions within their reepective wards, LGAs, States and Zones, promoting awareness and action on climate issues.
"We believe that Al-Makura as APC National Chairman would signal a new green and climate-friendly era for our great party, as he has the capacity to muster the intellectual fiber and political will to enable the APC establish a Climate Desk in every APC party office, effectively springing our great party to global relevance and practically engendering seamless policy interface between the Government and the Party.
"This shall indeed signal our great parry's seriousness about climate action and enhance our credibility on matters relating to climate change, circular economy and sustainable development; thereby attracting voters who prioritize climate action."
