Ministers of Defence and Finance from ECOWAS Member States met in Abuja on Friday, 29 August 2025, to agree funding modalities for the establishment of a regional counter-terrorism force.
The high-level meeting, held at the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters, reviewed the report of experts on financing options for operationalising the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF).
Ministers stressed the urgent need to strengthen the force’s capacity, warning that current resources remain inadequate to tackle West Africa’s growing security threats.
Reaffirming ECOWAS’ central role in peacebuilding, conflict management and democratic governance, the ministers underscored that collective security is vital to regional stability, prosperity and deeper integration
