The APC Grassroots Governance Group (APC G3) has dismissed claims suggesting that President Bola Tinubu is gradually relocating Nigeria’s capital from Abuja to Lagos, urging Nigerians to ignore what it described as a misleading newspaper publication.
The group was reacting to an article published in a national daily titled “Tinubu relocating Nigeria’s capital to Lagos, piece by piece?”, which it said was driven by ethnic bias and misinformation.
APC G3 said the report was the work of individuals uneasy with President Tinubu’s growing acceptance in the core North and accused the authors of attempting to stir ethnic tension.
In a Christmas Day press statement, APC G3 National Coordinator, Amechi Chuks Oyema, described the publication as a destabilising effort rooted in ethnic sentiments. He maintained that President Tinubu has continued to ensure that the dividends of democracy are equitably distributed across the country.
Oyema challenged the logic behind the article’s argument, asking: “Of what use is the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and NIMASA in Abuja, when their operations are domiciled in Lagos?”
He further pointed out that the concentration of banking headquarters in Lagos makes it reasonable for some departments of the Central Bank of Nigeria to operate from the commercial hub.
The APC G3 National Coordinator also faulted the report for failing to acknowledge that President Tinubu has not abandoned the rail contracts to Niger Republic and for overlooking what he described as the significance of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, which he said is commendable.
The statement additionally noted that poverty levels remain highest in the northern part of the country and questioned whether President Tinubu should be blamed for the situation.
APC G3 called on Nigerians to continue supporting the President, insisting that he is making genuine efforts to address the nation’s fundamental challenges and has done his best so far.
