The Kano State Government has indicated that the prolonged dispute over the Kano Emirship may soon be settled, citing recent political developments following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, during a radio programme in Kano.

Waiya said the government has adopted firm strategies aimed at restoring peace and stability in the state, adding that the impasse involving the existence of “two emirs” was approaching resolution.

Kano has remained locked in an emirship stalemate for nearly two years, with Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and Emir Aminu Ado Bayero both laying claim to the throne. While Sanusi continues to operate from the historic Gidan Rumfa palace, Ado Bayero has been based at the Nasarawa mini-palace.

Speaking on Muhasa, a local radio station in Kano, the commissioner attributed renewed optimism for a settlement to what he described as political alignment between the state and the Federal Government under the APC.

“I assure you that very soon, the Kano government will resolve the dispute over the Kano Emirate, because we are now one,” he declared.

Waiya also suggested that the resolution process could involve voluntary actions by the contenders themselves. According to him, “it is possible that some will step down from the throne on their own, or others will seek reconciliation because a mutual understanding has been reached.”

He stressed that the administration remains committed to engaging all relevant stakeholders through dialogue, insisting that the issue would not be allowed to fuel unrest or distract from governance.

“Our approach is guided by respect for the rule of law, traditional institutions, and the collective interests of the people of Kano State,” he said.

Commenting on Governor Yusuf’s return to the APC, the commissioner described the move as one that would unlock greater opportunities for Kano State.

“The defection opens more doors for Kano. With stronger collaboration with the Federal Government, we expect more support in critical sectors such as infrastructure, health, education, and social welfare,” he added.

Waiya further reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to its “Kano First” agenda, emphasising that the state’s development goals would take precedence over personal or factional considerations.

“Our priority is Kano. Anyone whose interest collides with that objective will not be allowed to slow down governance,” he said.
