The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, has called on Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo to resign following his refusal to defect alongside Governor Abba Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress.

Waiya made the call while speaking with journalists in Kano on Thursday, according to a report by Channels Television. He said effective governance depends on trust, loyalty and mutual confidence within the executive council, arguing that political divergence at that level undermines government cohesion.

He maintained that it would be improper for a deputy governor who no longer shares the same political alignment with the governor to continue attending crucial government meetings.

“This is his personal decision, but there is no way someone who is no longer with you should be part of the routine council meeting.

“Who knows with whom he might share important government secrets? In government, things are done based on trust, and you can’t trust someone who is not with you,” the commissioner said.

Waiya added that resignation would be the most honourable course of action for the deputy governor.

“If I were him, I would humbly resign,” he stated.

The commissioner’s remarks come amid political realignments in Kano State following Governor Yusuf’s recent defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the APC.

Waiya described the governor’s move as beneficial to the state, noting that aligning with the Federal Government would improve access to development projects and federal interventions.

Governor Yusuf, who won the 2023 governorship election on the platform of the NNPP, announced his decision to join the ruling party at the federal level, citing the need to strengthen cooperation with the Federal Government and attract more development initiatives to Kano State.

The governor formally left the NNPP and was received into the APC during a ceremony held in Kano, alongside several members of the state’s political structure who also defected.

Those who moved with the governor included members of the Kano State House of Assembly, federal lawmakers, local government chairmen and councillors, a development that significantly weakened the NNPP’s influence in the state.
