Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District, has died at the age of 52 in an Indian hospital.
The lawmaker reportedly passed away after a prolonged illness, for which he had been receiving medical treatment in India.
Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, Akwashiki had an extensive political career in Nasarawa State. He previously served as Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.
He was elected into the Senate in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and secured re-election in 2023 under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The death was confirmed by a senior legislative aide to the late senator, who described Akwashiki’s passing as a “great loss.”
The aide said the family was still in contact with relatives in India, adding that arrangements for the transportation of Senator Akwashiki’s remains back to Nigeria for burial had not yet commenced.
