A 43-year-old Nigerian-British businessman and social media personality, Igho Ubiribo, has died after developing a fatal pulmonary embolism following a cosmetic penis enlargement procedure in Thailand.
Ubiribo, popularly known as “Tiny”, “Denisi” and “Ego”, reportedly travelled to Bangkok with his wife, Danielle Simba Allen, for a luxury holiday before undergoing the procedure at an unnamed clinic in March.
The Daily Mail reported that 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine were injected into Ubiribo’s penis during the procedure.
According to the report, complications emerged shortly after the treatment when Ubiribo and his wife went for a massage at their Marriott hotel.
He reportedly complained of chest pain during the massage before losing consciousness twice.
Ubiribo was subsequently rushed by ambulance to Sukhumvit Hospital, where he was initially responsive to medical questions.
During an inquest at the Inner West London Coroners’ Court, Allen reportedly told doctors that her husband had recently undergone penis filler injections.
Medical personnel suspected a pulmonary embolism and recommended that he undergo a CT scan. However, Ubiribo reportedly became unconscious before the scan could be conducted.
He was later moved to an intensive care unit, where doctors performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation for more than 100 minutes in an effort to save his life.
He died in the early hours of March 6.
A subsequent postmortem examination carried out in the United Kingdom reportedly discovered cellular material in Ubiribo’s lungs consistent with the hyaluronic acid used in the cosmetic procedure.
Pathologist John du Parcq told the inquest that the material found in the lungs corresponded with the substance injected during the treatment.
He said the finding was consistent with a pulmonary embolism and also agreed with the results of an autopsy conducted in Thailand.
Coroner Jean Harkin subsequently concluded that Ubiribo died from a pulmonary embolism caused by the cosmetic procedure.
A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood vessel supplying the lungs becomes blocked. It can be life-threatening because the blockage may restrict blood flow to the lungs and put considerable strain on the heart.
Information presented during the inquest indicated that Ubiribo had previously undergone joint surgery and had been described as pre-diabetic and suffering from gout.
However, his London primary care doctor reportedly told the inquest that he did not have any other major medical conditions.
Hyaluronic acid fillers are used in some cosmetic penis enlargement procedures as a non-surgical means of increasing penile girth.
Medical professionals, however, have warned that injectable fillers can carry potentially serious complications.
The Daily Mail reported that such treatments can cost thousands of dollars, while the effect of hyaluronic acid fillers typically lasts for several months before the substance is gradually absorbed by the body.
Ubiribo had built a sizeable following on social media, where he regularly showcased his affluent lifestyle. He reportedly had about 185,000 followers on Instagram.
He was also said to own a home in Los Angeles valued at approximately $1.1m and a London apartment worth about $600,000.
Ubiribo married Zimbabwean fashion designer and socialite Danielle Simba Allen in a lavish ceremony in Zimbabwe in 2022.
His funeral was held in London, where he was reportedly buried in a gold coffin said to have cost more than $600,000.
Afrobeats star Davido was among those who attended the funeral. The singer, who was described as Ubiribo’s childhood friend, reportedly spoke at the ceremony and expressed shock over the businessman’s death.
He described Ubiribo as a man of great energy and presence, saying his death was difficult to accept.
The case has renewed concerns over the possible dangers of cosmetic penis enlargement procedures involving injectable fillers.
Although hyaluronic acid is commonly used in cosmetic treatments, the findings presented at the inquest linked the substance used in Ubiribo’s procedure to the material discovered in his lungs and ultimately to the fatal pulmonary embolism.
